Although this policy would appear to be merely a symptomatic response, it will detect conditions which might worsen later pregnancies and deliveries.
They therefore exclude infants who were stillborn or who died before attending the clinic. Results For the years 1952-53, 1962-63, 1972-73 and 1982-83 we have records of 526 infants. This number excludes twins and those infants who died before they could attend the Infant Welfare Clinic but includes infants who died later. There was no birthweight (or weight within 14 days of birth) for 79 of these infants, so the effective sample size is 447.
