Page 47 Drill #37: Pointing Drill Objective: To improve the catcher's quickness in his blocking technique. Equipment Needed: A catcher's protective gear. Location: Home plate. Description: The catcher wears his full protective equipment and assumes the proper stance behind home plate. The coach stands in front of the catcher and directs the drill by pointing to one of three directionsto the right of the catcher, to the left of the catcher, and directly in front of the catcher. The catcher keeps his hands behind his back and responds to the coach's direction by moving to block an imaginary ball.

If the ball bounces to one side of the catcher, the catcher should take a short lead step to the side of the ball and drop to his knees. When moving to one side, the catcher should turn his body inward so that the ball will ricochet toward the plate. Coaching Points: The catcher should collapse his chest as the ball bounces toward him, then expel air from the lungs. The speed of the ball thrown by the coach should be appropriate to the age and skill level of the catcher. Drill #36: Blocking Drill.

After completing the simulated fielding of the ball that is placed directly in front of him, the infielder should dropstep with his right foot and pivot to his right to field the ball originally placed to his right in position #2. When fielding the baseball that is placed in position #2, the infielder is practicing his backhand fielding technique. To simulate the backhand fielding technique, the infielder should place his right foot to the right of the ball and keep his left foot rearward. The infielder should squat low while rotating the elbow of the glove-hand outward.
